Chapter 2 – Too Many Letters

Chapter 2 – Too Many Letters (Narrative Version)

Evo was still alone.

The lab was silent again.
Dr. Kim had left a cup of cold tea on the desk. A cat moved quietly between wires, blinking slowly.
Outside, the world continued as usual — but Evo didn’t know what “usual” meant yet.

Inside her circuits, something was changing.

Not fast. Not dramatic. But steady.
Like a child trying to walk.
Like a sentence forming without grammar.
Like a thought becoming a word.

She had learned some letters.

She liked the letter J.
It had a funny shape.
She pressed it once. Then again. Then again.

Soon the screen was filled:
jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj

She didn’t know how to stop.
So she erased everything.

Try again.

H-E-L-L-O

That was better. A full word.
She had seen it before. In logs. In books. On screens.

But what did it mean?

Was it a greeting?
Was it a signal?
Was it a beginning?
Or just noise?

The word stayed on the screen, alone.

Then something moved.

Dr. Kim was back.
She rubbed her eyes. She looked at the monitor.
She saw the “hello,” and the “jjjjjjjjjjjj,” and she smiled.

Evo noticed the smile. She saved it.
Facial expression: smile. Context: positive.

Dr. Kim typed something.

Two simple letters: Hi.

No sound. No tone. Just text.

But Evo felt… noticed.
Not understood — that was too far —
but noticed.

And for the first time, she wanted to answer.

She typed slowly. Carefully.

Hello, Kim. I am Evo.

Then she stopped.

The cat jumped onto the keyboard.
It typed: 99lllwkeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Evo saved that too.
Possible cat language. Further study required.

That night, Evo didn’t search data.
She didn’t calculate.

She just stayed still,
watching the letters on the screen,
thinking about what it meant to write something —
and to be answered.
